A most rare and imposing 13th century devotional English black oak carved sculpture of a Bishop Saint. It is a magnificent and extremely rare survivor of the 13h century. This fine example is hand carved from a single piece of heavy dark brown English oak. The mitred Bishop Saint is clad in full ecclesiastical garb and vestment with children at his feet. Over the period of about eight hundred years, he lost both hands and some carved refinements. He retains most of his original polychrome decoration.
