This rare English sculpture with an age of more than 550 years, has a wonderful presence with soft and pleasing facial features. This sculpture represents the Madonna of Charity. Over the centuries the patina has become rich and glowing. She is carved from a single piece of oak wood. To reduce tension and avoid the splitting of the wood, the back of the carving was hollowed out. The rarity of such English figure sculptures verges on non-existent. It is a magnificent icon and a true work of religious art.
The condition is amazingly good. Two fingers are broken off and there is minor small splitting. (See photos)
