17th Century Dutch Old Master Painting, Monogrammed SR
Baroque style Dutch Golden Age landscape painting in oil on canvas. It depicts a tranquil river landscape with sailing vessels, figures along the shoreline, cottages and a prominent windmill beneath a softly clouded sky. It is painted in a subdued tonal palette, consistent with the 17th century Dutch tradition. Dominating the canvas is a blue sky with clouds. The painting is indistinctly monogrammed in the lower left on the side of a boat SR, which indicates it is from the workshop of Salomon van Ruysdael. The Dutch Golden Age landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael operated a well documented workshop, where several artists were trained or worked alongside him.
The painting is in good condition, commensurate wear with age. We noticed a touchup in the sky. The canvas is housed in a Dutch ripple frame.
