The composition of the present painting is a rendition by a follower of the Italian artist Antonio Allegri, IL CORREGGIO. His typical combinations of colors used, are visible in this 1650 painting. It is painted on a hand shaved wood panel. There is exceptional quality in this Renaissance depiction of Mary, Joseph, the infant Christ and the infant Saint John the Baptist. The Flight into Egypt was a popular subject in art. The episode is frequently shown as the final episode of the Nativity of Jesus and was a component in cycles of the Life of the Virgin as well as the Life of Christ.
The painting is in good condition with only minor touch ups. It is housed in a later Renaissance style polychrome and gilded frame.
