18th Century Large Bavarian Baroque Polychrome and Parcel-Gilt Carved Wood Putto..
H 31” x W 20” x D 9.5”
This monumental 18th-century ecclesiastical sculpture depicts a winged putto rendered in full round. The figure embodies the height of the Continental Baroque aesthetic, utilizing a dramatic, twisting contrapposto posture.
The expressive face features a deeply carved mouth, and thick curls that frame a plump, rosy countenance. The figure dynamically gestures with a raised, open right hand, as a deeply undercut sash wraps around the waist area in a sweeping manner. The arm and the wings were carved as separate components and seamlessly joined to the main torso via mortise and tenon wood pegging.
Good antique condition. The sculpture displays an exceptional, un-touched historic patina. Wear due to age. The putti sculpture is mounted on a later platform.
