18th Century Period Rococo Venetian Carved and Silvered Mirror
Antique hand carved mirror, from circa 1750 Venice, Italy. This Rococo silverleaf cartouche mirror features a shaped piece of original mercury glass surrounded by a silvered carved frame, decorated with leaves, volutes and scrolls beneath a shell pediment. A beautiful example of Venetian craftsmanship from the Rococo period. It is a piece of history and art that embodies the luxury and refinement of its era. Good antique condition. The silver leaf is partly tarnished. The mercury mirror, darkened over the span of two and a half centuries, has developed some blotchy spots. The mercury amalgam is inherently unstable, making it prone to gradual decay over time.
