19th century Italian iron/bronze Savonarola Dante chair.

Stunning Italian, iron and bronze Savonarola Dante chair. The curving wrought iron X-frame is topped with ornate bronze finials flanking the backrest and the front on each arm. This impressive chair with it’s wonderful sculptural iron frame has an iconic profile. The seat, back and armrest were later renewed with thick black leather. A Dante chair, a heavier version of the X-form chair, does not fold. Savonarola derives from a chair found in the convent of San Marco in Florence that was used by the 15th century Italian Dominican priest, Girolamo Savonarola. The earliest images of these chairs can be found on ancient Roman coins.
