19th-Century Pennsylvania Paint-Decorated Blanket Chest
An exceptional and highly vibrant 19th-century (Circa 1830-1850) American Folk Art blanket chest likely made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  It retains a brilliantly preserved vinegar and sponge-painted faux-grain finish which is expertly executed to simulate high-grade burl or maple wood. The case is framed by a heavy, dark-painted top molding on the lid and a matching lower base molding.
The chest is raised on its original, integral bootjack cutout bracket feet that seamlessly continue the exterior paint decoration. The interior is complete with its original built-in side storage till compartment. The use of square nails is noted. The interior front wall retains its original, hand-forged iron till lock block mechanism. The underside of the lid features an historic reddish-orange protective wash finish.
Condition: Excellent exterior finish, superb color retention. The feet are original and full-height. The back of the lid features period-appropriate but modern replacement brass butt hinges. The exterior decorative escutcheon plate and the interior lid catch prong are missing. Lock is replaced .
