In the early Renaissance, frames were fashioned after the facade of ancient Greek and Roman temples. They were referred to as tabernacle frames. The floral motifs, columns and dentils are dramatic and beautiful. Tabernacle frames are traditionally used to house religious paintings. This frame from the 19th century is hand carved, molded, gessoed and gilded. It has all the elements of an early frame. The inside is decorated with a PRINT of the Virgin Mary and child.
