The watercolor painting, features a fortune teller, is signed in the lower left corner “Louise Mansfield” (Louise Buckingham Mansfield 1876-1970). This is a moody, atmospheric scene, utilizing strong

shadows and bright highlights, painted in a dark earthy palette. The painting, which is heavily influenced by European masters, relied on dramatic chiaroscuro and muted tones. Louise B. Mansfield, born 1876 in Le Roy New York, was a member

of the Ashcan School. She became a successful Illustrator and fine art painter. She exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Society of Artists at the turn of the century. Her illustrations

appeared in Harper’s Magazine and House and Garden. Some of her paintings recently sold at Christie’s in London.

The condition is very good. The painting is glazed and framed in the period frame with the original backing.
