Antique Bronze Tankard With Original Plaster Maquette Signed Clodion, France 19th Century
Extremely Rare and unique 19th Century large bronze tankard matched with the original plaster maquette from the workshop of Michel-Claude Clodion (1738-1814) France. It pictures a bacchanalia with frolicking and dancing pans and satyrs. This masterpiece is modeled by the sculptor with great artistic skill. This work is one of the most minutely studied of all the Bacchic orgies. The bronze is incised on the bottom rim, “Clodion”.
Finding the original plaster from the master artist at the origin of the bronze cast is priceless. The original plaster is of paramount importance for the artist. It is the sole representation of the work. The fragile nature of the plaster maquette, and consequently, low survival rate, place it on the top of the value pyramid.Almost all of the original plaster models are kept in the artist’s studio (like Henry Moore) or in museums. This maquette escaped the studio’s confinement and somehow made its way into the market. The rare opportunity to own both pieces should not be missed.
