This is one of the most famous and popular plaster casts of the beautiful horse head of the chariot of Selene. It is made after a rescued marble sculpture from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. This cast is from the 19th century, which is an important distinction from later castings. In 1801, the Earl of Elgin obtained permission for the right to take casts of the remaining sculptures from the Classical Age at the Parthenon. The original can now be found in the British Museum. It is remarkable because of the expression carved into the animal by the sculptor. This casting is the original after the marble carving which has a portion of the lower jaw and the inner side of the top of the head cut away. There are also dowel holes where the metal bridle was attached. The condition, according to the early casting, is considered good. Some flaking has occurred. The Parthenon sculptures continue to capture both the admiration and imagination of all. Measurement: 35” H x 30” W x 12” D Weight: Approximately 45 lbs.
