Antique Tonalist Painting Farmyard with Animals signed Charles P. Gruppe
Beautiful muted painting in oil on canvas board features a rustic farm scene. Two calves beside a weathered barn. The painting is signed in the lower left corner, “Chas. P. Gruppe”. Landscape and marine painter Charles Paul Gruppe (1860-1940) was born in Canada. He studied in Holland and a portion of his work consists of Holland inspired scenes. (He should not be confused with his son, artist, Emile Gruppe.) While in Holland, Gruppe, the senior's skill at subtle tonal coloration became much identified with the Dutch School of painting. His works are in the finest collections and many museums of Europe and America. The condition is good commensurate with age and use. The painting is housed in a period gilded frame.
