Antique goat cheese press, large Pennsylvania Dutch hand-carved wood Primitive, Folk Art, circa 1800
This rare goat cheese press is American Folk Art. It is created by a peasant craftsman with intricacy. The bas relief carving on the front shows two women making cheese from the goat milk. The sides of the press are decorated with a goat head on one side and a dog head on the other. The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign, which stands for house and barn blessings, is chip carved on the back. The double handle is separate from the press. The wood has a warm, glowing patina.
