Early 19th Century Pair of Continental Polychrome and Gesso Decorated Carved Wood Adoring Angels. 
 
A substantial and striking matched pair of large-scale, carved architectural altar figures depicting kneeling angels in adoration. Carved from solid timber and depicted in profile facing one another, each figure is beautifully composed with hands clasped in prayer and large, detailed wings swept backward. The figures retain an exceptional, aged polychrome painted surface applied over a traditional gesso ground. Both figures display expressive, classical facial profiles and colorfully painted flowing robes. The flat, hand-planed reverses retain iron hanging hardware.
 
Condition: Good/very good, stable antique condition, consistent with age and use. Color remains vibrant. Small losses are visible along the edges of the drapery and wing tips and one hand. The woodworm has been treated and the structures are stabilized. (See photos and video).
