English 18th Century George III  Mahogany Demi-Lune Sideboard circa 1790
 
An elite 18th century period English George III semi-circular mahogany and inlaid sideboard. The quality is exceptional with rich, glorious deep color. It is constructed from a selected figured mahogany board outlined with delicate boxwood and satinwood stringing. The reverse is mounted with its original monumental three-post cast brass gallery rail with stylized urn finials. The back panel exhibits expected rough circular saw and hand-plane marks with minor oxidation cracks and shrinkage gaps consistent with age, cementing its pedigree as a true period piece. The top sits above a confirming case fitted with a central frieze drawer over an arched kneehole. The central drawer is flanked on one side by a deep cellarette drawer. The compartment contains a hand-planed pine interior fitted with an original build in draining hole. (the lead or zinc lining is missing) The drawers retain their original period brass locks,
The cellarette drawer is stamped, “R. Barron Patent”. These lock plates represent the revolutionary double-acting tumbler security mechanism, invented and patented by legendary London locksmith Robert Barron in 1778. The whole is raised upon four elegant, square
tapered legs terminating in original brass cup casters.
Overall very good period-authentic condition. The mahogany top surface displays a rich color and patination with minor historic surface scratches consistent with age and use. The brass gallery rail is structurally stable and retains its original mounting bracket. The brass casters and the stamped “R. Barron Patent” brass locks are a premium luxury commission from the late 18th century and are original to the piece. Secondary wood in one drawer and the brass pulls are an early replacement. Original key included.
