Important Italian 17th century bronze crucifix after Giambologna, Florence, 1529-1608 Cristo vivo (The living Christ on the cross) Christ is depicted with the head turned upwards and directs his gaze toward heaven. This head positioning is a rarity in Giambologna’s works, which makes it very unusual. Giambologna composes a religious image with great intensity. The bronze body is mounted on a wood cross with wooden three tiered stand. The cross is embellished with a bronze skull and an ornate angel crowned plaque is incised, “INRI”.

Wear and age have developed a beautiful patina on wood and bronze.
