Italian Grand Tour 19th Century Bronze Statue of Silenus Cradling the Infant Dionysus
Very fine bronze statue of Silenus and the infant Dionysus. This well cast figure of Silenus is After the Antique. It is believed to be a Roman copy of a statue after a Greek original by Lysippos. The bearded nude male figure is cradling the child in his arms and leaning against an animal skin draped rustic tree stump. The statue was one of the most admired statues in Rome. Casts and copies continued in popularity through the early 19th century becoming a beloved souvenir of the Grand Tour. The bronze is in good condition. Wear commensurate with age and use. It has a dark brown patina. An engraving on the base reads, “del Roma“ indicating the souvenir status of the Grand Tour. The marble base has a crack and the bronze base is slightly bent. Marble and bronze are later attached.
