Italian Old Master Painting 17th Century attr. Ilario Spolverini 1657-1734

This painting in oil on canvas represents a battle scene involving Turkish and Christian cavalry.  Ilario Spolverini was the most important artist of Battalistic genre subjects. The vibrant brushwork and the light effects on the armor and backs of the horses are characteristic aspects of the Parma painter.  Spolverini probably painted the canvas around the last decade of the 17th century. The setting and composite arrangement of soldiers on horseback fighting in a military engagement is a very decorative representation of a typical early cavalry battle.

The painting is in good condition. It was relined at an earlier time.
