Large Bronze Altar Crucifix 19th Century After Giambologna of Florence.
This antique silvered bronze crucifix is a rare and beautiful devotional object. Cristo Morto, the figure of Christ, is cast in bronze after a model by Giambologna (1529-1608). The present representation of Christ on the Cross with his head down is stylistically characteristic of Giambologna. The chiseling of the facial features reflects Italian Renaissance traditions of religious devotion. The silvered Cross has ornate foliage decorations at each finial. It is mounted on a Siena marble base.
Condition is good. Some rubbing of the silver has occurred.
