Santa Clara Pueblo traditional hand coiled blackware pottery.
Large elegant, inky black bowl with deeply incised motifs around the shoulder. This rare design depicts AVANYU, the water guardian. Because of the pottery’s high quality, it its to assume, it was created by one of the well known potters. The bowl is lightly incised on the underside of its flat foot with “Santa Clara”.
Santa Clara is famous for producing hand crafted pottery, specifically blackware with deep engravings.
Condition is good, although there is a surface spot restoration (pic). Wear commensurate with age and use.
