Late 19th Century Bronze Discobolus, “The Discus Thrower” Mounted on Marble.

 

This antique bronze sculpture, "The Discus Thrower" is of the Grand Tour after the antique, Discobolus. Originally, the Discobolus of Myron (Diskobólos) was a Greek sculpture completed circa 460 BC. The original Greek bronze is lost but the work is known through numerous copies. This sculpture of the well-proportioned body has captured a pattern of tremendous athletic energy. It is an early example of the advancement of Classical sculpture from Archaic.  This well-defined bronze sculpture is richly patinated and mounted on a dark rectangular marble base.

 

Condition: Good antique condition. Wear commensurate with age. 2 chips and a round sticker residue on the marble (see photos).
