Maritime Antique Carved and Gilded Ships Billet Head.
Rare original sailing ship’s billet head prow decoration. It is most likely an excellently preserved relic from a remarkable ship. This stunning example dates from the 19th century. The billet head is water gilded and profusely carved with scrolled leaves in foliate design. It was executed by a master carver, who carried on the tradition of this exceptional craft. A billet head is an ornately carved wooden sculpture, attached to the bowsprit to substitute the earlier heavy figureheads. Although it is an elaborate and expensive shipboard decoration, it is a superb piece of carved marine art.
A very unique and rare find of nautical history.
