This is one of the most artistic interpretations of famous images for stage designs, posters and books. "The Magic Flute", or in the original language, “Die Zauberflote” is the best known opera by W.A. Mozart. Papageno, the bird catcher, is a well known and important character on stage. Marc Chagall painted countless variations of various scenes of this opera. The execution of this gouache painting is considered one of the best. It includes all the elements of the iconic scene. Papageno plays the magic flute to coax the birds into his cage.

 

The painting is illegibly signed.
