Late 19th-early 20th century New Mexico carved crucifix, circle of Jose Benito Ortega. This Folk Art crucifix from New Mexico is from the late 19th-early 20th century shares all the characteristics of the best santos carver Jose Benito Ortega. The carving is gessoed and polychromed. It is executed in the classical carving tradition of saint making in northern New Mexico. The crucified Christ has strongly pronounced features, the knees rubbed raw. It certainly is a strong devotional image.


Condition is good with age related wear.
