Original antique American oil painting, signed Charles Walter Stetson, 1900
 
This dreamlike and idyllic oil on canvas “sketch” by Charles Walter Stetson (1858-1911) is untouched, in its original giltwood frame and signed on the lower left. This painting is rendered in the symbolist style and subject matter C. W. Stetson is most associated with, described as, “…figures in shadowy, outdoor settings”. This painting seems to be as one in a series of paintings of pagan ritual, “…showing ecstatic dancing nudes or ones dressed in diaphanous gowns.”
 
The painting is additionally dedicated and signed on the canvas back. It reads, “A mere sketch for my friend Dr. Knight Ch. Walt. Stetson 1900”
 
This painting is in original, untouched condition with original frame in papered backing. Wear due to age and use.
