Pair of English 18th Century Blackwork on Silk Embroideries

Pair of rare late 18th century black silk embroideries on a cream silk ground picture idyllic pastoral scenes. Blackwork is a monochromatic style of embroidery, originated in Tudor period England. Exquisite silkwork embroideries were popular in the late 18th and early 19th century and are now considered the highest quality needlework art of the period. This style of blackwork imitates etchings or woodcuts. The iron based thread’s black color was corrosive and over time has faded to a pale sepia brown color. There is some age toning to the silk. The embroideries have some small age related tear lines in the silk material. The blackwork is beautifully matted and framed with partly gilded wooden frames with protective glass. Each is titled SUMMER and  WINTER.
